Rear End and Rear Axle Rebuilds in Middle River, MD
A howl from the back that changes with speed, a clunk when you get on the gas, or gear oil where it should not be. Rear ends are worth fixing properly.
Chapter 01
A whine that follows your speed, not your engine
The rear end is the differential and axle assembly that turns engine power into rotation at the back wheels. It does its work out of sight, in a bath of gear oil, and it announces trouble with sound long before it fails outright.
The classic sign is a whine or hum that rises and falls with road speed rather than engine speed, and changes character when you let off the throttle. A clunk or bang when you take off from a stop or shift between drive and reverse suggests slack in the gears or the carrier. A rhythmic growl that gets louder in turns can point at worn bearings. Gear oil seeping at the axle seals or around the differential cover is the leak that quietly starves the whole assembly.
Trucks and vans feel all of this more than cars do. Load, towing and years of potholes put real stress on the ring and pinion, the bearings and the axle shafts.

Open it up before anyone says rebuild
A noisy rear end does not automatically need a rebuild. A bearing, a seal or a fluid change may be the whole job. Our first step is a diagnosis: drive it, listen to when the noise happens, check the fluid and what is floating in it, and inspect the assembly for play and wear.
When the evidence points at a real rebuild, the work covers the parts that wear together. That usually means the bearings, the seals, and the gear set along with its contact pattern and setup, because a ring and pinion installed with the wrong preload or pattern will howl again almost immediately. Setup is precision work, and it is where an ASE Master Automotive and Truck Technician background earns its keep.
One of our customers wrote that Mike offers good advice on options when a diagnosis turns out unexpected. A rear end is a textbook case. Sometimes the right answer is a rebuild, sometimes a lighter repair will do, and you get the choices laid out before the work begins. We will only sell you what you need.
Chapter 03
Ignore the whine and the bill grows
A rear end that is noisy today can be a locked or failed one tomorrow. Metal shavings from a worn gear circulate through the oil and wear everything else, so a repair that was a bearing set can turn into a full replacement if it waits. Gear oil that has leaked out makes the damage faster.
